Amendments to the Intellectual Property Law in Mexico

In Mexico, a decree has been published amending the local Industrial Property Law regarding the following:

  • a legal protection regime is established for geographical indications in addition to designations of origin;
  • Criminal sanctions are envisaged for a series of indications relating to the unauthorized use of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin that do not comply with Mexican official standards (NOM); And
  • the protection period for industrial designs is extended to 25 years and the novelty standard required to obtain industrial design protection is introduced.
